Second EU-Chile conversation to deepen the Association Agreement

The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Delegation of the European Union in Chile, organised the Second Conversation: "Modernization of the trade part of the EU-Chile Association Agreement" on November 23.

The main focus of the event was to facilitate discussion and interaction between the invited stakeholders and the EU representatives and the identification of the current Agreement main assets as well as the gaps to be addressed by the modernization.

Among the topics analysed, were to expand the beneficiaries of the current agreement (mainly SMEs and civil society organizations), while ensuring inclusion, equity and sustainability. In addition, the available commercial policy instruments were presented to strengthen the relationship between Trade and SMEs, Trade and Sustainable Development, and Trade and Gender. These three topics were discussed at specialized tables, with key representatives of the business sector, civil society, and other opinion makers.

"The objective of the modernization of this Agreement is to make the current world coincide. This includes taking into account the important role of SMEs in the economy, the inclusion of women in international trade and the contribution of free trade to the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals", said Stella Zervoudaki, European Union Ambassador in Chile. Negotiations formally began on November 16 in Brussels and it is hoped that these will develop at least throughout the next year.
